Belcalis Almanzar, better known as Cardi B, has quickly risen to fame as she has the number one song in the entire country right now. She surpassed Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato last week to make history as the first female rap artist to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list for ” Bodak Yellow “. This is something that hasn’t been done since Lauryn Hill’s 1998 hit single “Doo-Wop.” *She recently made history coming in at number one for the third week in a row, which has never been done by another female rapper! Cardi Even made a post about being happy that every female rap artist congratulated her on such an accomplishment.
The video has over 200 million views on youtube and has easily become the newest “ladies anthem”. Bodak Yellow is the kind of song that when you hear it, you have to sing the entire thing word for word. Cardi pretty much just talked her shi* on the track and told the haters how she bossed up!
The 25-year-old star is not new on the scene as she was once another “regular schmegular girl from the Bronx.” She worked at a strip club and was such a hilarious character on Instagram. her following grew immensely after she got the opportunity to join the mega franchise “Love and Hip-Hop” in New York, where she is from.
The show gave fans of the show the opportunity to know her. The show portrayed Cardi as a Take-No-Shi* type of woman who wanted to start her music career. In the beginning not everyone might have thought she was serious about being a musician, but she was persistent and released not one, but two mixtapes in a matter of months.
What I love about Cardi B is she seems to know she has flaws but accepts them. She knows her past shaped her and who she is today, and she doesn’t shy from talking about her grind or come up. She is comfortable in her skin and okay with being the goofy chick. Butttt… don’t get it twisted, she is serious about her craft and has proven so by staying consistent with the music and shutting down stages and red carpets all across the country!
Last night on the BET Hip-Hop Awards Cardi took home awards for “Single of the year,” “Best new hip-hop artist,” “Hustler of the year,” and “Made you look.” I’d say her first go round at this awards things was a success! Watch her performance and acceptance speeches here!
Cardi is serving looks and living her best life honey. (peep the slays!)
