Dope Artists You Must Checkout!

The world of music is forever evolving. From the style to the sound.

2016 has been oh so good to us as far as music goes. Drake dropped his highly anticipated album “VIEWS,” Kevin Gates released “Islah,” and Kanye stopped the world with “The life of Pablo,” which could’t be found anywhere but Tidal for almost a month after it was released.

The “Lit-ness” DOESN’T stop there. So Many artists have caught my ear and I want y’all to check them out and let me know what you think! Many of these artists were featured on the 2016 XXL Freshman cover

Lil Yachty

Lil Yachty aka Lil boat came in the game with a very unique sound. Not only does he have a different sound, but his beats go hard! At only 18, the college drop out turned rap artist has become famous very quick. I personally loved watching his interview on “The Breakfast Club” because I got to see his personality more and how he thinks!

Yachty has released two bodies of work this year, Lil Boat and Summer Songs 2.

He has also recently released a short documentary about his road to success called Keep Sailing.

Desiigner

Desiigner came right out the gate with probably one of the most played songs in 2016 thus far Panda. (if you were confused like me about the lyrics). Panda not only was catchy but the ad-libs were lit!

Desiigner didn’t go viral once, but TWICE for his “Timmy Turner” Freshman XXL Cypher. He had the world making all kinds of hilarious remakes. Desiigner was also featured on Kanye West’s latest album!

While he was criticized for sounding “too much” like future, he still made a name for himself and has a bright future in music.

Kodak Black

Kodak Black initially caught my attention when I heard No flocking and Skrt. Every person has their own personal troubles, which in Kodak’s  case, he has been in and out of jail a lot lately.

If this continues if could hinder the music, but so far his fans, including me are rocking with the kid. I’m sure he’s writing some good music in there too!

I truly wish him the best because he raps more about things people can relate to and that’s what makes him so popular.

Latest release : Lil Big Pac (2016)

Cardi B

From very humble beginnings Cardi B doesn’t hold back when it comes to telling her story. Cardi began her career as a stripper and soon became famous on instagram for being herself. Last year she landed a spot on one of the most popular reality TV series “Love and Hip Hop New York,” where viewers fell even more in love with her personality.

LHHNY allowed us to not only learn more about Cardi B, but we also got to see that she was serious about music.

Her first mixtape : “Gangsta Bitch Music Vol 1” was well received and honestly exceeded my expectations. Not only did she come out swinging with the lyrics but she had songs a lot of people could connect with.

22-year-old Chicago sensation Dreezy has had an amazing year so far!

She caught my attention with her hit single Body ft. Jeremih and after that I began looking into more of her music and I love it!

In my opinion she has a similar sound/style as my baby Tink, which hasn’t hindered her success at all.

Kehlani

This California sunflower is one of my favorite artists in my music library. Kehlani at only 21 was nominated for a grammy for her album You Should Be Here. She mixes RnB with hip hop and does it well.

Many of her songs seem to be so personal and consist mostly about love.

Her unique sound attracted me to her music. She isn’t afraid to be herself and let the world know she is still human at the end of the day and that’s what I love.

Mila J

Ahh, yet another Cali girl on the list. Mila J, sister of Jhene Aiko but they are very different. Mila J gives off more of an urban/hip hop sound, but can also switch it up and go Rnb with her music.

Although she isn’t new on the scene, Mila has came back with a stronger presence through  her last few projects- M.I.L.A. (2014) The Waiting Game (2015) and 213 (2016).
